I am a physicist working on ultrafast optics, nonlinear optics, structured light, and nonlinear laser dynamics — fundamentally and for various applications. I am hoping to include exclusively peaceful applications of optics and lasers in my research portfolio, and to attempt to apply my knowledge to areas somehow relevant to climate change. However, since I am an early career researcher with no long-term contract I don't have control for the time being. I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at Universit√© Libre de Bruxelles.

I'm a supporter of the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons (TPNW) and the associated international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons (ICAN). This includes more general organizations such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Global Zero, and the Ploughshares Fund. But I am as well a strong proponent of nuclear fission as a continuing part of our energy strategy and hopefully nuclear fusion as well in the coming decades.

I'm a proponent of the free internet and the protection of our rights online, and our protection from increasing surveillance, automation, and control of our daily lives by governments and corporations via technology. This includes supporting the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the Mozilla Foundation, the Tor Project, Fight for the Future, and the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

I'm a supporter of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, and the ACLU in the US. We all deserve to have important policy decisions that effect us to be based on evidence and reason.

I believe strongly in the European Union as a model for peaceful cooperation and the free movement of people, goods, and ideas.

I'm interested in sports, the outdoors, language learning, history, etc, etc. I like riding my bike, watching basketball, and playing ultimate frisbee.

Personal Thoughts on the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 (23/10/2023)

A few weeks ago the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists for their experimental work founding the field of attosecond science. (can you believe that “attosecond” is actually shown as a typo when drafting this?) This is … Continue reading
